Revolutionize your movie-watching experience with DivX Codec

Divx

There are so many codecs available these days, that you are hard-pressed to choose just one. So, you often end up downloading multiple codecs; which is not a problem, but you can save a lot of disk space if you choose just one codec that will fulfil all your video needs. And this brings us to the question of the hour – which codec should you get for an unmatched audio-visual experience? Without doubt, it is the DivX Codec.

For all those not-so-technologically-inclined persons who are reading this, a codec is a computer program or 'software', which encodes as well as decodes signals and streams of digital data. Why do you need it? Well, a lot of audio-visual players come bundled with their own codecs, but you know how sometimes, the video that you’ve just downloaded from the internet just refuses to play on any of your media-players? That's because the video is encoded in such a way that it requires a specific codec to decode them before its streams can be interpreted by your media-player. Only when you download the necessary codec will you be able to play that video through your media-player.

So why the DivX codec specifically? Aren't the other codecs you can get online any good?  Sure they are, but in ways more than one, the DivX codec package is the first choice of many who are familiar with the comfort, ease, and efficiency that DivX affords. In case you've never even heard about DivX codecs before, here's some information you might want to know about the company and its products.

The digital media company DivX, Inc. provides high-quality media-player, codec, and video-ripping packages that make for an excellent audio-visual experience in the areas of not just computers, but also television, DVD players and mobile-devices. The popularity of DivX stems from its ability to compress video-segments of large sizes into smaller bits without compromising on a superior visual quality. While a lot of codecs promise you this and not all of them deliver, DivX is one media codec you cannot accuse of this. DivX is substantially ahead of a lot of its competitors, and not without good reason. Take, for example, DivX 6. It added an optional media container format, called ‘DivX Media Format' to the earlier version which had just a codec and a media player.  The new format supports not just multiple video streams and audio tracks, but also allows for multiple subtitles. You can also add interactive menus, chapter points, et cetera, et cetera. Aside from having a partial backward compatibility with the files that have .avi extensions, the great thing about this is that multiple formats including .mpg and .qt or .mov can be played.

What’s also really nice about DivX is the simplicity and comfort with which devices incorporating the software can be operated. If you log on to the DivX website, you will find a list of devices that are DivX compatible. In effect, this means that you don't need to sit in front of your computer screen when you want to watch a DivX movie; now, you can watch your DivX movies right in the living room, on your television-screen! All you need to do is get a DVD player that has the DivX logo on it. This means that the device is compatible with videos that are in the DivX format, and that you can play all your DivX videos on it. If you’re planning on getting a DivX compatible DVD player, you might want to make sure that it has a USB-port as well, because if it does, then you can plug in your flash-drive or even your external hard-drive and watch all your DivX movies with ease!

If you thought, that's about all the awesomeness and excitement DivX brings to your life, think again. Gone are the days of the Dark Age of Movies, where you'd have to wait for the latest films to be released and stand in line for tickets and then in another for popcorn, and then in another for…and so on. This is the Age of Technology: You can now sit at home in comfort, and order the latest movies online. There are many providers on the Internet, who offer to rent or sell you the latest Hollywood blockbusters, coded in the DivX format. You can choose between Film Fresh, Warner Video Live for the latest in Hollywood offerings, while L'Harmattan TV and INA (Institut national de l'audiovisuel) – which is available in France – get you access to rare films, documentaries, and much, much more. When you've selected your movie – you can rent or buy it - pay through your credit card and simply click on the download link to begin downloading the movie in the DivX format! When the download is done, start the DivX media player. Then sit back and relax as you enter the realm of Hollywood for two hours of cinematic bliss, courtesy the good folk at DivX Inc.

You'll have noticed by now that we were not exaggerating when we said that the DivX codec-player package is one of the best media packages you can find on the Internet. So if you don't have one yet, go online and become a part of the amazing, revolutionary DivX experience!

There are different codecs that DivX has developed for different operating systems and this has obviously been done for greater compatibility and a wider range of use.
There are different codecs available for different operating systems and these are as follows:

  1. DivX codec v6.8.5 for Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit)
  2. DivX codec v5.2.1 for Windows ME/98
  3. DivX codec v6.7 for Mac OS X
  4. DivX codec v5.1.1 for Mac OS

All you need to do is to install the codec in your computer, depending on the operating system that you have and you are all set to go.

DivX codecs

DivX is basically a brand and has been created by DivX. Inc and this previously called DivXNetworks. Inc. One of the most popular products of this company is the DivX codec which has gained seminal popularity in the technological world because this codec can compress videos of very large size and have a very high quality of visuals at the same time. This DivX codec utilizes lossy MPEG-4 Part-2 compression. Here both file size as well as the quality of the file is both maintained. You can play all the DivX movies on your computer. But to do that, the DivX codec needs to be installed first. There are different codecs available for different operating systems and these are as follows:

  1. DivX codec v6.8.5 for Windows XP/2000/Vista (32-bit)
  2. DivX codec v5.2.1 for Windows ME/98
  3. DivX codec v6.7 for Mac OS X
  4. DivX codec v5.1.1 for Mac OS

DivX 6 considerably enlarged the scope of the DivX product by bringing in some really prominent changes. Previously there was only a codec and a player. And now the best thing was they added a media container format as well.  This was a new optional file format and it was introduced with the DivX 6 and was called the DivX Media format. This was called DMF and had a .divx extension. This has support for the following things:
Interactive video menus

  • Multiple subtitles (XSUB)
  • Multiple audio tracks
  • Multiple video streams
  • Chapter points
  • Other metadata (XTAG)
  • Multiple format
  • Partial backwards compatibility with AVI

This was the new DivX Media Format and it came with a DivX Ultra Certified tag. Any video which is encoded along with the DivX codec is a MPEG-$ video. However, the newly released DivX Media Format is along with media container formats like Quick Time belonging to Apple. The DivX Media Format has MPEG-4 and that is part of the specification as well. The thing is, the file still has a .divx extension. But the file format is still the Audio Video Interleave or the AVI format. There is a facility for storage of multiple audio and subtitles and for these the data needs to be stored in the RIFF or Resource Interchange File Format header files. And then there are the other AVI hacks as well. The DivX codec still supports the way standard AVI files are made as well.
Then there is also the DivX pro codec. This is called pro because this codec has a lot of complicated encoding settings and these settings let you make really high quality DivX videos along with some third party software.
With this codec you can not only make some high quality movies using the DivX converter, but also make sure that the videos will not only play on the computer but also on mobile phones, DivX certified DVD  players, gaming consoles and others. There is a wide range of performance. Then there are many advanced encoding settings using which you can polish up the videos that you have made.
